Hyundai Eon

Hyundai Eon

The Eon is one of the better looking cars in the entry level segment; a segment dominated by the likes of Maruti 800 and Alto. Hyundai launched the petrol variant of the car in October 2011 and later introduced an LPG variant in early 2012. Although the Eon features among the best selling entry level cars in the country, it still has not produced the kind of impact one may have imagined – primarily because the buyers in this segment are relatively more concerned about the resale value of a car and Eon being a new launch still hasn’t got the kind of resale value that an Alto has. Things seem to be gradually improving though.

Hyundai Eon

This is a car with an 814cc 3-cylinder engine that can crank up a power of up to 56 PS at 5500RPM. The resulting torque is as high as 74.5 Nm at 4000 RPM. For a comparison, Alto only delivers around 48 PS of power and 69 Nm of torque. The Eon measures 3495 x 1550 x 1500 with a wheelbase of around 2380mm. The Eon has a kerb weight of around 725kg which is slightly higher than the Alto (690kg). The Eon comes at a starting price of Rs. 2,79,883 (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the D-Lite model.

Manufacturer Mileage Claim

Like all entry level cars, the fuel efficiency is one of the strong talking points of the Eon. According to Hyundai, the Eon should be able to deliver 21.1 kmpl FE. This is the number extracted from the ARAI tests which are under standard driving conditions. The actual mileage on ground will be different in the presence of traffic and bad roads.

Test Drive & Customer Feedback

On CarTrade, there are a few user reviews of the car. The overall mileage as noted by the website is around 17.3 kmpl on city roads and 21.1 kmpl on highways. The independent reviews seems to agree with this too. Most users have reported the FE on their car to be between 12-19 kmpl on city roads and 21-22 kmpl on highways.

On CarDekho, the reviewer points out that the Eon engine is basically that of the Santro reduced by 1 cylinder. The Alternator Management System present in the top variant tends to reduce the fuel consumption a bit and thus improves your mileage. Eon customers chipping in with their feedback on the review note the mileage they have been noticing to be around 15-16 kmpl within city limits and 20-21 kmpl on highways.

While this looks rosy, a number of customers reporting in on CarWale have a different story to tell. The customers report a mileage of around 11-13 kmpl on city roads which is extremely low by any standards. However, there are also other customers who claim to be noticing 15.7-17 kmpl on city road and 25+ kmpl on highways. I honestly do not know what to make of it – it could be that a few customers have some fuel related issues with their Eon which may or may not be fixed.

There are a handful of user reviews on AutoJunction for the D-Lite variant of Eon. Aggregating the numbers provided by the various reviewers, the mileage delivered by Eon seems to be between 12-14 kmpl on city roads and around 20 kmpl on highways (or smaller towns where you can drive at a comfortable 50-60 kmpl at all times).

Finally, let’s look at what users on MouthShut have got to say. There are 18 reviews for the Eon and these reviewers have together given the car a 4/5 rating for fuel consumption. There are quite a few 2 sentence reviews complaining about the car being very cramped and small. On the mileage front, 16-18 kmpl is what users seem to noticing on city roads. On highways, the reported number is closer to the advertised figure of 20-21 kmpl.

So there you have it. The Eon is not without its bunch of unhappy customers. I do not know what to make of some reviews complainign about the really low mileage. So I do not want to advise one way or the other. Do test drive a car and take a decision independently.

  1. City : Pune
    I got my Eon Era+ on 14th Sep13.

    Exterior
Everybody can see it and exterior is good.

    Interior (Features, Space & Comfort)
Interior and seating is good. I am 5.7 so it is good for me. Rear seat width and height is better than Alto800. Rear seat has small head support. Due to comfort i chose EON over Alto800.Gear change indicator is good option.

I didn’t buy music system from Hyundai as they were asking 12K for it and said warranty will lapse if i buy from outside. I bought sony stereo (FM+usb only) from snapdeal in 3140Rs and went to Hyundai dealer with it. I asked them to fit it and bought 2 front speakers from them They charged 2500 for 2 front speakers, labour cost and FM antenna. It means i spent total 5600 Rs and got good music system. Warranty will also remain intact as they fitted it.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox
I had driven Santro earlier so find less power in EON as it is 800cc. Didn’t get a chance to compare with any other 800 cc car like Alto. It will be fair if it iscompared with same segment car.
For first week : i filled 800rs petrol(approx 9.5 liters) at that time my first fuel light was blinking and when it stated blinking again my meter was showing approx 80 kms. Sometimes i used AC also.It means approx 9KM/L mileage. Mostly i drove in my society on open roads but it was semi learning phase for me as a driver as i was driving after a long time. I was very sad to see this, i started reading reviews online and found other people are also getting 10KM/L. I thought i made a bad decision by preferring EON over Alto.

Second Week: I again filled 500 Rs petrol(approx 6 liters) while first fuel indicator was blinking. For two days i went to office one side (22KM) so total 88 KM and some small trips nearby. In morning while going to office there was very less traffic and i drove mostly in 3rd and 4th gears. While returning at 7-8pm roads were packed traffic was at its peak, mostly i drove in 1,2 and 3rd gears(Sometimes 4th also). I didn’t use AC but sometimes used only AC fan. so i covered 90+Kms in 6 liters means approx 15-16 KM/L mileage.

Morning less traffic and evening full traffic, so we can say average city traffic. Now i was little relieved regarding mileage. I am hopeful that i would get 21-22 KM/L on highways w/o AC. I have also heard that mileage improves after 2-3 services.

One thing i read about gear knob vibrations, in my car it never vibrates. Sometimes i feel difficulty in changing gears but Hyundai say it will be smoother after few days and service.
For better mileage, i suggest do not keep your foot on clutch while driving unless it is required.

    Ride Quality & Handling
Suspensions are good , i won’t say very good as it is a budget car. I do not find any issue in handling, it is good. For 1-2 days i found steering sensitive but now i can handle it very well.

    Final Words
I preferred EON due to its better space and specially rear seat comfort. If you are ok with Alto800 rear seat and height, you can choose alto with company fitted CNG.
within a week i am planning to fit CNG from BRC as my Hyundai dealer says dealer warranty will remain intact but i have doubt on it but still planning to fit branded CNG kit as my daily run would be 45 KMS. Hyundai executive told me that company fitment for CNG is also done from BRC and for that they charge 60-70K. So I will get it done in 30-35K from BRC.
Once i get CNG fitted will provide my feedback on EON CNG performance and mileage.

    Areas of improvement
    Better suspension.
I am not able to see bonnet, i prefer bonnet visibility for confident driving.

  2. I am driving the eon for more than a yr. From the very first month ,i m getting 19- 22 kmpl mileage . worst mileage in the city was 16 kmpl, and top mileage in the highway w/o Ac was 26.67 kmpl..
In the highways i m easily getting 22-24 kmpl w/o ac, maintaining speed bw 60- 80 km, while increasing the speed bw 100-120 km , mileage comes down to 19-20 kmpl.
After running car for more than 6000 km, (mixed city n highway drives) overall mileage is 21.08 kmpl.
