Honda CB Shine

We have already discussed the Stunner CBF from Honda in the 125cc segment. One another bike in the same range is the Honda CB Shine. The motorbike comes with a 124.7cc engine that can deliver a maximum power of 10.12 BHP (7.55 kw) and a max torque of 10.54 Nm. If you compare this with the Stunner, the latter offers a slightly higher power of 11 BHP. Other features on the bike include a spring loaded hydraulic suspension on the front and the rear, a 4 speed gear and a strong but light weight diamond frame. The Honda CB Shine is priced well below the ex-showroom price of the Stunner. It is available at a starting price of just Rs. 54,782 ex-showroom, Delhi.

Honda CB Shine Mileage

If you are a Honda fanboy and are looking to buy one of these two bikes from the Japanese auto major, you have to compromise on either the buying price or the mileage. If you remember from our writeup last time, the officially claimed fuel economy on the Stunner is 68.3 kmpl. According to Honda, the CB Shine can deliver a slightly lower economy of around 65 kmpl under standard test conditions. It goes without saying that these are under ideal conditions and may not always be what you can see in real on city roads.

CB Shine Customer Reviews

Let’s start with the folks discussing the bike on IndiaGarage. According to the various posters, you can expect to see between 50-55 kmpl on city roads while this can increase between 58-62 kmpl on highways. Reviewers though point out other issues like noticeable engine vibration at higher speeds.

Deepak from BikeAdvice has reviewed this bike way back in 2008 and in his review, he points out the average mileage on the Shine to be around 50 kmpl. He however notes that you can optimize the fuel consumption by taking the right steps like maintaining air pressure and regular servicing.

In a discussion thread on Yahoo, people who have tested the bike report an economy of between 55-60 kmpl on the average that can rise to 62 kmpl on city roads.

MaxAbout has an entirely positive review at least as far as highways are concerned. According to their review, the CB Shine can deliver close to 58 kmpl on city roads that can go insanely high to 73 kmpl on highways. I would suggest you to take this highways economy with a grain of salt.

On MouthShut, there are over 158 reviews for the CB Shine and the reviewers have given the bike a rating of 4/5 with respect to fuel economy. The average mileage on city roads appears to be between 50-55 kmpl although some people report lower economies of around 42 kmpl. Again, depending on the driving style and conditios, this can also go to the other end of the scale of around 60-65 kmpl.

Overall, this seems to be a good bike with respect to mileage. Here is a snapshot of the fuel consumption as reported by various reviews. There are of course other issues as reported on various reviews. But regardless of that, if you think a mileage of around 55 kmpl is good for you, you should go for this bike!

Honda Activa

This has been a long time coming. Honda Activa is without doubt the most popular among the scooters out there in the market. The Activa was first launched way back in 2000 and has since then been upgraded with better features and more importantly better mileage – up to 15% more. Honda Activa is built with a 109cc 4 stroke single cylinder engine and can offer a max power of 8 BHP and torque of 9 Nm. The scooter is now available in the markets at a not-so-cheap price of Rs. 46,387 ex-showroom, Delhi.

Honda Activa Mileage

Honda Activa Mileage

Since the launch of the 2009 model, Honda claims the Activa can deliver 15% more mileage. Not just that, they claim that this model now offers the best fuel economy of 66.7 kmpl among scooters in India. That’s a tall claim given the fact that the officially claimed mileage of TVS Scooty Streak is higher at 68 kmpl. For comparison, the officially claimed mileages of other scooters we have reviewed hover between 45 kmpl for the Kinetic Sym Flyte and 60 kmpl for the Hero Maestro.

Actual Customer Reviews For Fuel Economy

Let us start with the reviews from BikeSpace. In their review they note that the Activa can deliver a mileage of 54 kmpl with a pickup that is lower than other scooters out there. It is evidently a compromise on either the pickup or the mileage. MyIndiaGuide reports a slightly lesser mileage – of just 52.2 kilometers on the liter. Again, BharathAutos notes a mileage that is between the other two reports – 53.5 kmpl.

ZigWheels, the automobile section of the Time Group, in their review have noted that the lower engine cylinder displacement on the Activa as compared to rivals has helped the scooter better the others in mileage. Their review shows a mileage of 46.8 kmpl on the Activa.

IndiaMart have not exactly reviewed the Activa. But in their description field, they report a city mileage of Activa to be around 55 kmpl. MaxAbout on the other hand paints a totally different picture. Their review has pegged the city mileage of Activa to be just 40 kmpl while the fuel economy improves on the highways to 45 kmpl. This is totally not what a customer whose main priority is the mileage would want. MaxAbout is not the only one to have reported such a low mileage. Some reports on forums like IndiaGarage have in fact noted even lower mileages like 35 kmpl on Honda Activa.

So as always, when in doubt, we hit MouthShut for the user reviews. There are over 350 reviews on the site with the average user rating the Activa 3/5 for mileage. This is typically not a good rating since from my earlier reviews, I have noted a 3/5 rating to be usually given to power-bikes, like the Honda CBR 150R for instance. Reading into the reviews, one cannot see why though. Most users have reported a mileage of between 45-55 kmpl on their Activa. It’s probably because of the difference between what they expected (66.7 kmpl according to company officials) and what they see on the road. Nevertheless, the difference in mileage is a valid concern and something that Honda ought to address right away.

Checking the Olx postings for Honda Activa (models since 2009), one can see that posters here actually report an average mileage lower than that reported on MouthShut. Customers have reported a fuel economy of between 40-50 kmpl. It’s not everytime that we see mileages reported on Olx to be lower than that reported on MouthShut since the latter is a reviews site and the former is a classifieds site where posters regularly sugarcoat their products for sale.

In any case, there you have it. The Honda Activa is definitely a good scooter for both genders. But you have to be careful with the mileage since it is not reported to be very consistent among various reviewers. If you are someone who is going to be happy with a 45-50 kmpl fuel consumption, there is no reason why you should not be going for the Activa. Honda CBR 150R

The Honda CBR 150R has been available in international markets since the early half of the last decade. The bike launched in India in March 2012 and has since then become one of the popular motorcycles in the 150cc segment. The bike comes with a 149.4cc displacement 4-stroke engine that can deliver a max power of 13.1 kw and 12.66 Nm torque. Features on the CBR 150R include a liquid-cooled engine, a responsive PGM fuel injection technology that is responsive to changing conditions, and wide tubeless tyres. The Honda CBR 150R is available at a starting price of Rs. 1,19,131 ex-showroom Delhi for the Standard variant.

Honda CBR 150R mileage

Honda CBR 150R Mileage

If you are someone who is serious about the CBR 150R, you should not be worried much about the mileage given the fact that the bike is priced at over a lakh of rupees. Considering the fact that this is a sports bike, the mileage is expected to be pretty low and as far as I know, Honda has not announced a mileage for this bike. Please write in the comments if I am wrong here. Nevertheless, here is a review of the mileage delivered by Honda CBR 150R from other sources.

Customer Reviews

BikeDekho has reviewed the Honda CBR 150R on their website and according to their site, the bike can deliver a mileage of 40 kmpl. IamaBiker writes from their test drive that the bike can deliver an impressive 48 kmpl on the highways although on city roads, the fuel economy can drop to 40 kmpl. Similar on the review from MakeShout where the mileage has been pegged at between 35-40 kmpl.

In fact, the average mileage reported by several sources is consistent around the 35-40 kmpl mark. IndianAutosBlog reports 35 kmpl while the consensus on IndiaGarage is 40 kmpl fuel efficiency. However there are some reports where the tested mileage is vastly different. For example, TechnoAddiction and MyIndiaGuide both report a mileage of 50 kmpl. MaxAbout delivers the most balanced mileage review reporting 32 kmpl mileage on city roads while the highways mileage for the Honda CBR 150R is reported to be 45 kmpl.

There are 16 reviews for the Honda CBR 150R on MouthShut and the users have in all rated the bike 3/5 for fuel efficiency. Surprisingly from the reviews that have reported a mileage, the fuel consumption appears to be extremely good at between 45-50 kmpl. I have my doubts over these reports considering the bike segment the 150R belongs to, and so take these reviews with a pinch of salt.

Overall, should you go for this bike? First off, you should not be basing the performance of a sports bike from the barometer of fuel efficiency. In any case, do note that the bike offers pretty decent mileage for its category. The price is expensive but should be worth every paisa. Here is a snapshot of mileage reviews from various sources:

Honda CB Unicorn Dazzler

Honda CB Unicorn Dazzler is a motorcycle in the 150cc segment launched by the company in 2010. A Deluxe variant of the CB Unicorn Dazzler in dual-tone colours was launched last year. The Unicorn Dazzler is equipped with a 149.1cc 4-stroke SI engine that delivers a max power of 14 BHP and torque of 1.3 Kg-m (12.8 Nm). Some special features of the bike include a screenless front cowl, a 240mm front disk brake and a mono suspension suitable for ‘racing’ conditions – so the company says. A new CB Unicorn Dazzler can be yours in Delhi at an ex-showroom price of Rs. 66,738 while the dual colour DLX variant can be obtained for Rs. 67,757.

Honda CB Unicorn Dazzler Mileage

Honda CB UnicornDazzler  Fuel Economy Claim

In the 150cc segment, we have reviewed quite a few bikes in the past. The official mileage claimed by a lot of these bikes is not over 55 kmpl. Yamaha Frazer for instance claims a mileage of 50.81 kmpl while the Hero Impulse and Yamaha FZ16 fetch 55 kmpl and 50.81 kmpl respectively. Only the Bajaj Discover 150cc fetches a good 64 kmpl under standard test conditions. Going by these official claims, Honda CB Unicorn Dazzler is the second best of the lot. Honda claims the CB Unicorn Dazzler can extract 60 kmpl under standard conditions.

Customer Reviews Under Real World Conditions

How closer to the official mileage does the CB Unicorn Dazzler clock in real world conditions? MaxAbout reports that the mileage in city road conditions can drop to 50 kmpl. Their highways mileage is the same as the official claim. A user review report from BikeAdvice is on similar lines. Here, the reported mileage on city roads is 48 kmpl while this spikes up to as much  as 62 kmpl on the highways in the 55-65 kmph speed range.

A number of other reviews report similar fuel economy on the CB Unicorn Dazzler. IndiaGarage reports a fuel consumption efficiency of around 52-55 kmpl if you consistently drive around the 60 kmph mark.

Moving on to what customers at MouthShut say – there are 76 reviews for the Unicorn Dazzler and the overall rating for the bike in the fuel efficiency category is 4/5. The average mileage seen by the customers reporting here appears to be around 48-52 kmpl although there are outliers reporting 40 kmpl as well as 60 kmpl. Olx is no different. Customers here report a fuel economy in the range 45-55 kmpl.

So as I see this, the mileage that customers see on the bike is pretty consistent. The variation appears to happen in the way people use their bike. The Unicorn Dazzler gives a great mileage when you drive in the 50-60 kmph mark. Those customers who have to travel only small distances, the mileage seen may be less because it does take time for the engine to warm up and offer a good fuel economy. Similarly, customers who drive at top speeds of over 75 kmph, the vibration and the general conditions would reduce the mileage. So all in all, the performance of this bike is what you make of it. Here is a snapshot of what various reports claim on the mileage of the Dazzler 150cc

Honda CB Twister

Given the lower cost and relatively higher mileage, 110cc motorcycles are becoming increasingly popular in India. Honda has more than one bike in this segment. While we have already discussed the Dream Yuga, we are yet to review the mileage of Honda CB Twister which was launched much earlier back in 2009. This motorbike comes with a 109cc 4 stroke single cylinder engine that offers a max power of 9 BHP and a max torque of 9 Nm. The bike weights just over 108 kg and given the  light weight, it is a much preferred bike by people who would prefer utility over style. Honda CB Twister comes at a starting price of Rs. 45,156 ex-showroom in Delhi.

Honda CB Twister Mileage

Honda CB Twister Mileage

The last 110cc bike we discussed on MileageInfo was the TVS Star City. The bike claimed an official mileage of 83.9 kmpl while in real life testing conditions the bike was reported to draw around 65 kmpl. According to Honda, the CB Twister could draw about 70 kmpl of fuel efficiency under standard testing conditions. Given the difference in official mileage claims, can the CB Twister still match the Star City? Let’s check the reviews out.

User Reviews

Mileages reported by customers are normally lower than that claimed by the company primarily because customers test their bike mileages in city conditions whereas the company measures it under standard highway-like testing conditions. According to BikeDekho, the Honda CB Twister can give a mileage as claimed by the company on highways although in city driving conditions, this may fall down to 55 kmpl – the average they claim is 65 kmpl.

IndianDrives.com offers a pretty great review of the bike and in their test, the blog reports a mileage of 57.2 kmpl under mixed conditions (city + highways). They however claim the mileage gets better as you drive more and you could possibly reach 60+ kmpl after riding 1000 kilometers.

Grahaksevak is a consumer complaints forum. CB Twister customers who have posted on the site have reported a mileage of around 45-50 kmpl. MaxAbout though has a better review. They report a city road mileage of 55 kmpl while the fuel efficiency on the highways is a good 70 kmpl.

All said, if you are looking for a real good reason to buy a CB Twister, you should check out the reviews by customers on xBHP.com. In the ownership thread for CB Twister where people who own a Twister post, a lot of customers report a mileage of  over 70 kmpl even in city conditions. Customers also report mileage of close to 97 kmpl on the highways. The common refrain in the thread is that when you drive in the 40-50 kmph range on highways, you can see 80+ but while on the city roads, you can only expect around 65 kmpl – not bad at all and definitely on par with, if not better than what is reported by people riding the Star City or Honda Dream Yuga.

Before I finish the review, I would definitely want you to consider what people over at MouthShut.com are saying. There are 126 reviews for the CB Twister and they together rate the bike a 4/5 for fuel consumption. Most of the reviews report a mileage of between 60-70 kmpl with some readers again noting a better mileage of close to 80 kmpl while driving on the highways.

Here is a crisp summary of the mileages reported on various websites.

I do not say this everytime but the Honda CB Twister seems to be one bike where the reality appears better than company claims. You can definitely see awesome mileages in the right conditions. Elsewhere on everyday roads, you can still see a pretty good mileage close to what the company claims. If you are on the fence still, take my advice – go for it.

Honda Aviator

Honda India launched its popular Aviator range of scooters way back in 2009. Last year, the company launched an upgraded version of the vehicle. The scooter comes with a 109cc 4 stroke engine delivering  8 BHP power at 8000 rpm and a 6 liter fuel tank. Aviator standard is now available at an on-road price of Rs. 51,650 while Aviator Deluxe is available for Rs. 57,291 – both prices calculated for the Delhi market.

Honda Aviator Mileage

Honda Aviator Mileage

There is no advertised mileage for Honda Aviator put up on the Honda website. However, from what I could gather through research online, the Deluxe variant of Honda Aviator is expected to offer a decent 52 kmpl mileage under standard conditions. When I say standard conditions, it means conditions that are pretty conducive for very low fuel consumption, which means under regular city conditions, it could be difficult to reach this mileage

Honda Aviator Fuel Efficiency Customer Feedback

According to a little known website called ScootyPrice, Aviator offers a mileage of between 45-48 kilometers per liter. Quite a few “customers” to the website’s post have observed a mileage of between 50-55 kmpl. That is not to say everyone’s happy though. A lot more customers also complain of mileage as low as 35 kmpl. In fact, a few customers have even reported the low mileage on ConsumerComplaints.in – a popular consumer complaints forum.

Like in the case of Kinetic Flyte, Honda Aviator too has a pretty ordinary 3/5 rating with respect to fuel consumption on the user reviews website, MouthShut. This rating comes from over 82 customer reviews. According to one user, the mileage is as good as 46 kmpl, while another reports 30 kmpl. Apparently, the mileage falls from 45 kmpl to 30 kmpl after the first service according to a review from a third customer.

On BikeAdvice, a commenter who claims to have tested the scooter exhaustively claims that the Honda Aviator offers a mileage of 30-40 kmpl in city conditions while that in highways goes up as high as 45-50 kmpl.

Should You Buy Aviator?

A summary of the mileage reviews for the Aviator is showcased at the bottom of this paragraph. If you compare this with the mileages offered by the Activa (54 kmpl), Honda Dio (40-43) or TVS Wego (40-50), you will see that the mileage you can realistically expect is not much. Of course this seems to be a better bet than Kinetic Flyte, but that’s not saying much. This doesn’t seem to be a bad choice, but just that there are better products than this in the market. You can probably go for them instead.

Honda Dio 110cc

Honda first launched the Dio way back in 1988 in Japan. In India though, the scooter first started to be manufactured since 1996. The latest 110cc was showcased earlier this year during the Auto Expo in Delhi. The latest variant of the Honda Dio is available at a price of Rs. 47,928 (on-road, Delhi).

Honda Dio 110cc Mileage

Official Honda Dio 110cc Mileage

Dio’s newest variant comes with a slightly larger engine (110cc vs. 102cc in the older variant). But this is not the only change. Honda claims the new 110cc Dio has a fuel efficiency which is 15% more than the older model. The scooter is expected to offer a mileage of 55 kilometers per liter of petrol.

Mileage Reviews From Honda Dio 110cc Testers

Let’s start with what the reviewers from ZigWheels observed. In their test drive, they report a not-too-bad mileage of 40-43 kmpl on city roads. However, do note that the test drive was done by a hefty 100kg male. So if you are a regular sized female, expect to see more mileage; at least going by what ZigWheels observed.

Top Gear’s review of the scooter aligns pretty much with what ZigWheels has posted. Their test drive notes a city road mileage of around 48.5 km/l. But if you thought that was good enough, brace yourself for something better as according to a reviewer on BikeDekho, the scooter consistently provides a mileage of over 50 kmpl.

On MouthShut, few reviews are from customers who have purchased the latest variant of Honda Dio. Of them, only one talks specifically about the mileage and this user has reported that they do not see anything more than 30-35 kmpl. That’s a pretty low mileage for a 110cc light build scooter. But to be fair, this is only one review and do not base your decision on just one review.

Looking into what other people who have tested the scooter have noted, it looks like the most realistic mileage that you may expect is indeed in the 40-43 kmpl range. According to a review on MaxAbout, the mileage they derived was exactly that. Checking out classifieds websites like Olx and Quikr, the mileage appears to be around 40-45 kmpl again.

Is Honda Dio 110cc mileage good enough?

It definitely is, but I don’t think it’s better than TVS Wego from a mileage perspective. TVS Wego, if you remember, had customers consistently reporting a mileage of over 50 kmpl although there were quite a few reports of around 45kmpl. But considering that the average tended to be closer to 50 kmpl, I would go for a Wego than Honda Dio 110cc considering the latter is surely going to give me a lesser mileage.

Honda Stunner CBF

Honda launched the Stunner way back in 2008 and the bike has since then become one of the company’s most popular launches in the Indian market. The Honda Stunner is today available at a price of Rs. 61,233 on-road in Delhi. Some of the most interesting features of the Honda Stunner include an integrated front body cowl, a maintenance free battery, a viscous air filter, a 11 bhp high performance engine with 5 speed transmission and a sporty half chain case.

Honda Stunner Official Mileage Claim

According to an article on ZigWheels; a popular Indian automobile website, the Honda Stunner is the second most fuel efficient bike in the 125cc segment. The official mileage claimed by Honda is 68.3 kmpl. Only Hero Glamour, with 69 kmpl, has a higher official fuel economy.

Customer Reviews For Honda Stunner Mileage

Let’s start off with the review from BikeAdvice – the website has a highly positive review of the bike and claims the mileage to be around 66 kmpl. However, comments posted on the review by people who have already tested the bike indicates a more realistic mileage of anything above 60+ km/l. This is also confirmed by posts on IndiaGarage.

On MouthShut, there are over 117 reviews for the Honda Stunner. Overall, these users have given the Stunner an impressive 4 stars out of 5 for fuel consumption (mileage). A majority of the users have reported a mileage of over 55 kmpl. While one user has noted that their mileage spiked up to 62 kmpl on city roads after first service, another customer has reported that their mileage dropped to under 50 after servicing. Overall, despite minor complaints, almost all users seem to be happy with the bike’s mileage.

AutomobileUpdates, another review site, reports a city mileage of 52 kmpl while the same on highways is 66 kmpl. Motorbeam, usually spot on with its mileage updates, does not have a great review of the fuel consumption simply noting a mileage close to 65 kmpl. However Arun Garg from Arunii.com says he only sees a mileage of around 40-45 kmpl in city conditions; nothing spectacular.

So there you go. If you are looking to purchase a Honda CBF Stunner, you do not have much to worry from a mileage perspective.  A lot of people looking to purchase a bike like the Stunner for its looks; which is definitely excellent. Other features are also extremely brag-worthy. So if you have the money, go for it – it is definitely worth the money and will also save you bucks with its pretty generous mileage. Honda Dream Yuga

The Honda Dream Yuga is one of the latest bikes released by Honda’s Indian subsidiary, HSMI. The 109cc engine motorbike is Honda’s least expensive release at an ex-showroom price of Rs. 44,600. The bike was launched in May 2012 and from the perspective of engine capacity is not larger than a Honda activa.

Official Dream Yuga Mileage Claim

According to official figures released by Honda Motorcycles and Scooters India, the Dream Yuga delivers a mileage of 72kmpl. That’s better than most motorcycles out in the market today! But does it really offer so much in a real world environment? Check out below.

Mileage Reviews For Honda Dream Yuga From Users

In their exhaustive review of the Dream Yuga, MotorBeam has observed that they were able to extract 58-60 kmpl in city road conditions while on  highways they were able to get up to 65 kmpl. BikeDekho though, in their test found the mileage to be 55kmpl and 70kmpl for city roads and highways respectively. OverDrive, the popular automobile magazine points out that the mileages need not necessarily be that high. Their review suggests a pretty bad mileage of 47kmpl under city conditions – It’s bad because it is nowhere near the mileage claimed by Honda in the test conditions.

So what are the actual customers saying. According to MouthShut, One customer from Kolkata notes a mileage of 58-60 kmpl in Kolkata traffic. Another rider from Navi Mumbai notes 50-55 kmpl. Other customers who have posted in the forum note mileages of anywhere between 50kmpl and 65kmpl. An exception though is a user who sees 85kmpl which may not be a standard. Overall, the bike gets a 4 star rating on 5 for fuel consumption.

Overall the Honda Dream Yuga appears to be offering a pretty decent mileage. Purely from a mileage perspective, I would pick the Dream Yuga over Hero Ignitor simply because Yuga offers a better deal at a lower price than the Ignitor.
