Yamaha SZ R

Yamaha SZ-R

There is not much of a difference between the Yamaha SZ R that we will be discussing today and the SZ-X that we had discussed a while back; except for a few variations in the looks and accessories. Anyway, we will discuss the SZ R independently to see what customers have got to say about it.

Yamaha SZ-R

In terms of specs, the SZ-R is very much like the SZ-X. It comes with a 153cc air-cooled 4 stroke engine delivering a max power of around 12.1 PS at 7500 RPM. This effectively gets you a max torque of 12.8 Nm at 4500 RPM. Unlike the SZ X that has drum brakes on both the front and the rear wheels, the SZ R has a disc on the front and a drum on the rear. The bike measures 2050 x 730 x 1100 mm and weighs 134 kg. Equipped with a wheelbase of 1320mm, ground clearance of 165mm and seat height of 802mm, the other specs are mostly the same. The SZ-R can hold 14 liters of fuel at any point. You can purchase the motorcycle at a price of Rs. 57,500 ex-showroom Delhi.

Manufacturer’s Mileage Claim

Given that there is not much to choose between the SZX and the SZR, the manufacturer’s claim has stayed unchanged. As a matter of fact, Yamaha has one standard fuel economy claim for all their SZ variants – 62.4 kmpl. Do note that this is under test conditions and the real world FE would definitely be lower than this. Only a few other bikes like the Pulsar, Xtreme and Achiever have a higher mileage at the 150cc level.

User Reviews & Test Ride Reports

On Indiagarage, a customer reports that his SZR gives an unsatisfactory 43 kmpl on city roads. However there are more than a couple of other users who think the SZR is probably the best in class and they note a much higher FE of between 50-55 kmpl on city roads.

MaxAbout in their review say the SZR is “virtually identical to its younger sibling SZ-X” without any element of surprise when it comes to engine that they say lacks power. In terms of mileage, the SZR is reported to offer 55-60 kmpl on city roads and 65 kmpl on the highways. I feel the author has been too generous in this case. Anyway, let’s go through what the others have to say before jumping in on a conclusion.

In a customer review report back from 2011, BikeAdvice writer Naren calls the bike Sporty and ‘one of the hottest chicks’ in the Indian bike market. The review, which is overall very positive, does not specify the mileage. However, the readers reporting their FE claim it to be somewhere in the 45-49 kmpl mark.

On Motorbeam once again, the reviewer points out that the power delivered by the bike may not be up to the mark. However, there is a lot of thrust at low rev which is good in the city traffic conditions. On the mileage front, the reviewer notes 55+ kmpl overall which is extremely good which makes me rethink what I said about MaxAbout’s review.

Anyway, the final word needs to come from the customers themselves. On MouthShut, there are over 133 reviews for the SZR. The reviewers have together rated the bike 3/5 in fuel consumption which is not really a good figure. However, reading through the latest reviews, it seems like customers are happy with the mileage offered. The reported figure has hovered between 40-52 kmpl which is a pretty wide, yet good number to go with.

The summary of reports from various sources is tabulated below. Overall, the SZR looks like a decent bike to go with. Do you agree? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

Before purchase 150cc, i reviewed all the 150cc bikes and i found YAMAHA SZR will be best for me in mileage concern (45-50 kmpl), but after buy this i experience personally it and conclude very poor mileage it is having i.e. 30-35kmpl.

  2. I am also suffering problem of mileage of bike. MY SZR mileage is 30-35. Really don’t know what to do. But I love my bike.

    1. Hi, am sz-r user for past 2yrs. i love the performance of this bike its damn suitable for city rides as it gives good pulling in idling RPM which is required to reduce strain on throttle. as far as mileage is concerned it gives me an avg. mileage of 36 in city where as in high way riding it gives a mileage of 42. i use this bike completely in city and very rarely in highway and am damn comfortable with it in city, but mileage disappoints me a little, but i love YAMAHA, so cheers for it. YES YAMAHA

  4. Kindly suggest me as I’m in a plan to buy Yamaha SZ R and the dealers are saying that it’s giving a mileage of 55 km/pl. Please clarify on this and I am primarily going to use it in city

  5. Hi,
I bought this bike in may 2013 and after 2 servicing am getting mileage of around 33-35 in city. Please suggest if we need to maintain speed or RPM to get better average. Mileage is very disappointing.

    1. Hi Ankush, to maintain an avg. mileage of 40 u need to drive it softly. Should not drive rashly, should not cross 4000 rpm i.e. 50kmph maximum. It will result in an increase in a meager mileage of 3 or 4. Kindly see that u dont drive it rashly. do services promptly, change engine oil every 3000kms, and clean air filter regularly. Thats it. Enjoy riding drive safe 🙂

  6. Hi
Past 2 years i am using Yamaha SZ R, I am really disappointed with its mileage and poor quality parts. At the starting stage I got 53 kmpl so I was really happy however day by day I feel its mileage is very bad. Most of the days I got 40-45 in city ride, some time it reduced to 35-40 kmpl, may be due to heavy traffic.
Now it’s reaching 2 years and its parts are wearing out one by one. In the past one month, front oil seal is gone and when I discussed with my mechanic he told me that most of the parts in this bike is made in poor quality. I need to change most of the parts on it. Please my friends don’t buy it.. If you want to buy a bike choose another one.. I am going to sell this soon… And thought of buying a good mileage bike.. Normal guys can’t afford its expenses after purchase. The parts rate is also high..I bought this bike with lots of expectations however I am really disappointed with my decision.

  7. Yamaha is for true bike lovers. Bike lovers are not vegetables that they will not drive more than 50 kmph. They will slice their way when the road is empty. Yes SZR is an amazing bike and I have it. Purchased in 2011. I kept 1st hand Yamaha RX 100 for 10 yrs. I can tell you frankly that SZR reminds me of RZ – just the sound part is not there. SZR has enough pick up to give Pulsar a good fight. SZR is damn smooth even if you are riding it at 80 kmph. Sound changes to boom at that speed. Very much fun to ride. The best part is that it has a much better handler than Pulsar. I have driven all Pulsars. Yes pulsars have better average. But the fun factor you get from Honda and Yamaha bikes are different.

  8. I changed my decision to buy YAMAHA SZ R. It is good looking. But mileage they offer is incorrect and too different as per the review.

  9. Hello all,
I own a YAMAHA SZ R 2012 Model. I purchased this on July 2012. Now I’m getting a mileage of over 55 KMPL in city. Please ride the bike initially at the manual prescribed RPM until the specified kilometers. Mostly, if you drive the bike at MAX TORQUE RPM (as per Engine spec), surely you will get a better mileage. My riding condition is like that. Don’t rush to accelerate. All the best.

    1. Hello yuvaraja,

I’m crazy about this bike Yamaha SZ R. Im willing to buy this bike please tell me at what speed will you ride the bike..?? and now its 2015 and the bike still gives you the same 55KMPL..?? Please reply…

  10. Hi I’m using Yamaha SZR bike for the past one year. I love the bike so much and its engine is really very smooth. It gives approximately 67 kmpl on highways and 60 kmpl in city. My bike is used only by me and I love my SZ-R. Cheers Yamaha

    1. Hey how did you use to drive when the bike is new and now? Is the bike delivering same power i.e. can they compete in race? And what’s the top speed?

  11. I am a proud owner of Yamaha SZR for more than 1 year. My SZR gives me a mileage of 40 on average. It is good in terms of power pickup, riding pleasure, turning balance and outlook. If you are concerned about mileage, then you can go for Yamaha SZR

  12. Hello friends,

I am using Yamaha SZ-R since April 2013. Bike runs awesome but its mileage is very poor and service dealers always make some sort of blunders. At the time of sale they said it will give an average of 55-60 kmpl but after that they said its max average is 45kmpl. Friends, I need your support to complain against Yamaha on their official website and also to the consumer forum. All of us must complain against them so that Yamaha should be aware about these kind of blunders.

    1. Sure Umesh

You are corrct…I have the same opinion regarding this bike. We will work against this cheating from Yamaha.

  13. I am using Yamaha SZRR blue since August 2013. I am completely satisfied with the looks, charm and comfort of this bike. Its best part is the handling and pickup. I love its engine sound which seems smooth. However the only downside to it is the mileage which is about 40-42 kmpl which is on the lower side.

  14. Hi Yuvaraja,

I would like to by this bike. Please let me know that still are you using the same? If so please share the present condition of this bike, mileage you obtaining, maintaining costs etc. Your prompt reply is highly appreciable. Thanks in advance.
