Yamaha FZ-S

Yamaha FZ-S

The Yamaha FZ-16 was one of the earliest bikes reviewed on MileageInfo. The FZ-S that we are discussing today is an improvisation upon the same bike and comes with distinct features like a front visor. I was not too impressed with the FZ-16 when I first reviewed it. The bike offers a city mileage of just around 38-42 kmpl on most counts. We have had 180cc bikes that offer a better economy. While the FZ-S is not too different from the FZ-16 on many aspects relating to the engine, let us look at it independently and see if it is worth the buck.

Yamaha FZ-S

First, the tech specs. The Yamaha FZ-S is built with a 153cc single cylinder 4 stroke engine that delivers a maximum power output of 14PS @7500 RPM. The torque delivered can go up to 13.6Nm at 6000RPM. There are both electric and kick start options The wheelbase measures a standard 1334mm and the bike has a ground clearance of 160mm. This 135kg bike has a total fuel capacity of 12 liters. The bike is priced at around Rs. 67,000 ex-showroom at Delhi.

Manufacturer’s Claim

The official claim on the fuel front is not too different on the FZS when you compare it with the FZ-16. If you remember, the claim from Yamaha was 50.81kmpl on the FZ16. This has not changed and Yamaha maintains the same figure for the Yamaha FZS as well.

Test Ride & Customer Feedback

MaxAbout calls the bike exteriors “strikingly different” from the FZ-16 despite both the bikes built over the same platform. The review commends the bike on its ease of navigation without any turbo lag and also for the nearly silent engine. The fuel consumption reported on city roads is around 35-40kmpl with the number jumping up to 45kmpl on the highways.

Although there are quite a few proud customers of the FZS on IndiaMart, there aren’t too many reports on the fuel consumption. One user though notes the mileage to be around 38kmpl on busy city roads which rises to 48kmpl on highway roads.

On xBHP, there was a discussion initiated by a customer who reports a pretty low mileage of 25kmpl on the FZS. However, as reported by various other forum members who happen to own the bike, this appears to be a one-off case since the average fuel consumption seems to be in the range of 35-40 kmpl on city roads. So in case you are experiencing bad economy, do take it to the service station and get the bike checked.

A reader on BikeAdvice has reviewed his FZS after owning it for around six months. While he commends the bike on the style and ‘eye catching features’, the reviewer does note that the mileage is on the wrong side of 40. It just delivers around 35kmpl on city roads. Another reader who in his review says the FZS gives a feel of a 180cc despite being a 150cc bike says the fuel consumption on his bike was just between 38-40 kmpl.

There are close to 107 reviews for the Yamaha FZS on MouthShut and these reviewers have rated the bike 3/5 for fuel. Do note that most bikes, including those in the higher power range have got 4/5 if they seem to be on par with the industry standard. A 3 rating probably means there are more users who are not happy with the fuel economy than those who do.

Surprisingly though, the mileages reported on MouthShut seems to be actually higher than what a lot of reviewers from other sources have put. Except for one reviewer who says he gets 25kmpl, almost every other review has noted a fuel economy on city roads to be between 38-53kmpl which is extremely good. Even here, the average reported mileage appears to be around 45kmpl which is not bad at all.

I’ve put all these figures from various sources in the table below. The report from MouthShut appears to be some sort of an anti-climax since this user-reviews site is the only place where the fuel economy appears to be good. And I would personally believe in these numbers than those that were reported on test rides simply because these are from real customers. Overall, truth be told, I’m confused. Have a look at these numbers – does this make you want the bike or not want it? Tell me in the comments.

  3. guys understand this bike has the fattest tyres more than that of pulsar 200ns , had better size shocks biger than pulsars, and you gotta give somwere as it gives you perfect balance, belive me balance is something you would think of on a wet rainy dark night when you wished you had bought something better. Agreed some drawbacks like service which yamaha has to correct.

  4. have been drivin it since 4 yrs, undoubtedly a very sound bike, but now we have ktm too… n would suggest to go 4 ktm, as has the same milage buddy.lol

  5. my fzs is 3 months old it is hardly giving the mileage of 34 km/ltr in city ride. i went to authorised showroom/workshop but it did not help. any suggestion in this situation, how to increase the mileage of bike

    1. To increase the mileage just ride in economic speed limit (30-45 km/h) and keep engine RPM under 6.

  6. fz is best for comfort. maine fz bechke dusari bike lee. lekin bad me fz hi achi lagi aur fir maine vahi kharidi. so go for fz.

  7. I am going to buy new Yamaha fzs 2013 how much price for on the road and how much mileage it gives

  8. my new Yamaha FZS gives me nearly 50km/l average that’s really nice. I think it is the one of the most popular sports bike.

  9. Hey if u claim that good mileage for fz then tell me your riding conditions. I may as well follow. What is the speed range that you go in and the driving road conditions.

  10. Hello guys,

The last few months I have been thinking about the bike I want to buy and have been searching the internet. I got different views as well as reviews for the various bikes available in the Indian market. Finally i went with Yamaha FZS raging red in colour and I’m riding this macho machine for the past one month. In order to share the personal reviews, the expectations regarding the bikes are fulfilled by YAMAHA FZS. I am quite enjoying this bike as it has been giving me a comfortable and smooth ride. The eye-catchy rear view of the vehicle is just awesome, you can’t get such a look in any other vehicle, whether it’s Pulsar 220, Karizma, or Apache. The grip of the machine in rainy weather too is really impressive.

Now coming to the crucial criteria which is mileage; that is a little bit worrying till the vehicle is being serviced. After that it is good. Initially you will get an average of 35-40 kmpl and in later stages it may rise to 40-45 kmpl, which is quite good as far as my opinion is concerned.

Finally I agree with the quote about this vehicle – “LORD OF THE ROADS” and one can only feel it when you own it. So better luck from my side 🙂

  11. I own an FZS for about 1 year, I am having a problem with my bikes mileage coz its consuming around 20 kmpl. Power expectation and pick-up is also not as good as compared to my friends’ Pulsar 150. I love the way it is designed, unlike the other Indian bikes. I am happy with it but its killing me with the consumption.

  12. Guys, My 3 years old FZ-S (2010 Model) gives around 38-40 kmpl on city road conditions. On highways it gives around 45kmpl well it is obvious for a bike with big radial Tyre and 41mm telescopic fork. This bike looks very stylish and macho (Inspired from FZ-1). This bike is good for city traffic conditions and not for highways. It has got quite good features compared to other bikes in this segment (Mid ship muffler,Mono shock Suspension, Wide handle bar,41mm fork for stability). I’m very happy and a proud owner of this bike.

For people who get less mileage – I shift gears at 4000rpm and my average to speed is 85kmph. My Till date top speed is 115kmph.
Check ur bike and driving mechanism for better mileage. Many of my friends say they get like 35-40 kmpl but 22-25 kmpl is very less pls check ur bike.

  13. Hi friends, I bought a new FZS 2 months back. I am not happy with my fuel consumption. It’s giving me only 28 kmpl. How do I increase the mileage? I am really fed up with this fuel consumption.

  14. Now I am planning to burn this bike. Fed up with this mileage. Yamaha showroom technician couldn’t solve this. Now I have decided to use UNICORN carburetter for alteration

  15. FZS is a good bike in this segment but it always hurts people who are expecting average mileage. The company should think about it. After all, this bike can create record sales in the Indian market.

  16. I bought this bike in october 2013. before servicing it was giving an average of 32kmpl but after the servcing its giving me an average of 47 kmpl in city.
I think if you shift gear at a proper speed then it will be helpful to you to get a good mileage :). I am very happy to be an owner of this bike. And I feel like I am “THE LORD OF STREETS” 😀

  17. Had it since 2010, serviced every 2500 kms, gives average of 32 in city-3rd gear at 30-40 kmph and 40 on Highway NH-8 Delhi to Gurgaon.

  18. I have a 2011 FZ 16 black model. I have completed 30,000 kms and now I get a mileage of around 25-27 kmpl. Please help me guys.
