Hero Splendor Plus

The Hero Splendor is one of the long serving brands in the Indian motorbiking segment having been introduced more than a decade back. The Hero Honda Splendor Plus was first introduced in 2004 and later, in 2007, relaunched it with modified fairings, alloy wheels and a few other improvements. After the split between Hero Motocorp and Honda, the bike has been marketed as the Hero Splendor Plus and continues to be one of the most popular products from the Hero Motocorp.

Hero Splendor Plus

The Hero Splendor Plus engine has a displacement of 97.2cc and is air cooled with a 4 stroke single cylinder. It delivers a max power of 7.5 PS and a torque of 7.95 Nm at 5000 rpm. The bike measures 1.97m in length and 0.720m in width. With a ground clearance of 159mm, the bike is definitely on par with the other bikes custom built for the Indian road conditions. However, with a kerb weight of 109kg, the Splendor Plus is made to feel lighter and thereby contribute to a better fuel efficiency. The Splendor Plus is available in Delhi at an ex-showroom price of Rs. 42,950 for the Spoke model.

Mileage Claim From Hero

Although the Splendor Plus is built with an engine similar to what is available on the newer model, Splendor Pro, the mileage delivered is lower. According to Hero Motocorp, the Splendor Plus can give you 80.6 kilometers for every liter of petrol. Compare this with the 90.1kmpl claim on the Pro. But again, as we saw in the other article, the real world numbers may vary vastly considering these are numbers fetched from standard testing conditions.

We will do a side by side comparison of all the Splendor bikes later. Keep checking.

Customer Reviews

BikeDekho calls this bike a “commuter cum executive bike” which is both sleek and attractive. The website reports an economy of between 65-70 kmpl on city roads. With a 11 liter fuel tank, this means, you could go 770 kilometers at a stretch before going completely dry.

MaxAbout has a very similar review of the bike. They note that the engine used in this bike is comparatively slower than those used in the other variants of the Splendor. The fuel efficiency as reported stands at around 65-70 kmpl on city roads that can go as high as 72-75 kmpl on highways. On IndiaGarage though, a user claiming to be a Splendor Plus customer reports a mileage of just around 55 kmpl.

Let’s next look at MouthShut. There are over 70 reviews for the bike and the customers have given the bike an overall rating of 4/5 for fuel consumption efficiency. Reading through the reviews, we find that the average mileage that customers see on city roads is pretty impressive and is consistently between 58-65 kmpl. On highways, it seems to increase to as much as 69-70 kmpl. One customer however warns that you may not see a great economy in the first 2-3 months after purchase.

On Olx, most of the Splendor Plus bikes put up for sale have their fuel economy specified in the 60-70 kmpl range although there are more than a couple of bikes that are reported to be seeing 47-55 kmpl economy.

So there you have it. Here is a summary of fuel efficiency as reported by various sources.

Source, City (kmpl), Highways (kmpl)
Official, –, 80.6
BikeDekho, 65-70, —
MaxAbout, 65-70, 72-75
IndiaGarage, 55, —
MouthShut, 58-65, 69-70
Olx, 60-70, —

As a bottomline, it is pretty clear that Splendor Plus delivers what it matters. So if you are considering this bike, my suggestion is you should go for it.

Mileage is around 55 to 65 kmpl in mixed driving conditions. To extract better mileage, use 10W30 engine oil, regular servicing and ride between 40 to 60 kmph. Dont rip it.

I am using Hero Splendor+ 2014 model. Shape & designing is superb. The outlook too is good. My Splendor+ gives 70-72 KMPL at 40-50 kmph speed. I love my Splendor+ bike. Save petrol & money

  10. mallesh.g 1 July 2014 at 8:36 pm Permalink

I am using Splendor+ for the past 2 years. I am not satisfied with this bike because it only gives a mileage of 50kmpl. Bikes from five years ago are good quality. But for the past 2 years bikes are totally delicate, they give poor mileage and have no life.

    Hi Readers,
I do own a 2005 Hero HONDA Splendor Plus (Red) and I do extract close to 63-65 kmpl in moderate bumper traffic and very bad roads. If it is with very bad roads near my home to main road and full tight peak bumper to bumper, then it goes down to 58-60. But riding in decent traffic, free flows, I have extracted a maximum of 73 kmpl, which includes a one way (23 km) home to office in day time with moderate traffic and a down trip 23 km back home in mid night (no trraffic at all). Rs. 50.00 petrol daily (0.66 litres @ Rs. 75 / litre would do my run for 23+23 = 46 kms a day. Mind you, I follow the below to get this FE.

    Riding conditions :
I NEVER CROSS 50 kmph speed, even while on mid night free empty roads.
I maintain front 30 psi and back tyre 40 psi air pressure (back tyre just run 2500 kms – replaced months back).
I switch off engine in long wait signals.
I don’t spend a lot in maintanence, but do clean spark plug by myself and change engine oils once in 2500-3000 kms gap.
Most of my rides are below 45 kmph speed. I never rev the engine at all.
I anticipate the traffic and avoid sudden brakes and aggressive acceleration.
    My Gear Shifts.
    1st to 2nd –> 10-15 kmph
    2nd to 3rd –> around 20 kmph
    3rd to 4th –> nothing more than 30 kmph.

    My Maintanence :)
I never even clean / wipe my bike in my life. All it goes for a regular service with oil change once in 5-6 months @ an interval of 2500-2700 kms . Thats it. No much money spent on replacements in these 9 years. Total kms run 26948 kms as of today.

    My opinion:
Splendor Plus (esp Hero Honda one is a boonfor a middle class man who can barely spend around Rs. 1.15 per km on the road on fuel. Its reliable, cheap to maintain, solid and breeze to ride in 40-45 speed.
Try all these and get back to me for tips to increase mileage @ 7200067199; kumarquality@hotmail.com.

    Happy Rides.

The main problem is Back Pain. Please do consider this is a very important when every one buy a new Bike. I have a splendour pro Bike and bought this for better mileage and budget. I am using this bike almost more than 6 months. Now i am facing the back pain problem. I haven’t tested the mileage so far. Look wise it is very good. But the front lightening is very very poor and you cannot stop the bike at >=60 kmph speed in particular distance.

    Hero Splendor Plus 2006 model
Mileage Info after riding for over 1.75 lakh kilometers.
    Ride condition between 42 to 48 kms/hr.
Service every 4000 to 6000 kms with mandatory oil change and standard service.

City roads with mixed traffic conditions: 55 to 58 kmpl.
City roads without much traffic: 58 to 60 kmpl.
City roads with constant rides on ring roads without much traffic halt: 59 to 62 kmpl.
Highway: 62 to 68 kmpl if you are experienced and good at engine breathing expert.
My bike condition as of 2014 =
    No Battery (needs replacement)
    Bald tyres (needs new ones)
Indicators not working due to no battery
no horn courtesy of no battery
Dim lights as coil needs to be rewind/replacement
    pistons changed (rebore)
speedometer dead as it needs new worm
    Chain sprocket changed (entire kit)
Timing chain changed twice. After this the engine is silent without much noise.
3 major accidents still got them repaired and conditioned to as good as showroom bike.
Even now after 1.74 lakh kilometers my bike gives anywhere between 55 to 59 without fail.
If refueled at SHELL petrol pumps gives extra mileage. My bike is now used to SHELL petrol pumps only. Other than that it struggles.

I own a 2006 Hero Honda Splendor Plus bike.
As on September 2015 bike has done more than 1.30 lakh kilometers.
    Mileage Info.
I use normal Shell petrol from the day I purchased the bike.
Bangalore City Mileage: 58 to 60 to 62 kms.
    Highway: 66 to 68.
Once I remember it gave 72 kms mileage per liter in Pondicherry. May be one off incident.
Every day morning before I ride the bike, bike is started and engine is in idle for 3 to 4 minutes so that oil circulates well and engine heats up.
I ride the bike at constant speed of 40 to 45 kmph mostly in 4th gear on straight roads. Very gentle at throttle and braking. Bike has never crossed speed of 50 kmph.
    Spares and replacements:
    Speedometer worm: Several times.
    Speedometer cable: 4 times.
Two accidents: Front fork bend, handle bar replacements, head lamp, indicators, engine cover, foot rest, front guard, speedo meter, and others.
Spoke Wheel Bend repair: 6 times.
Service and engine oil change: Every 4000 to 6000 kms. Cost: Rs. 250 to Rs. 450 to Mechanic. Rs. 60 to 100 for water wash. 280 to 340 1 liter of engine oil. Each service used to cost me Rs. 1000 as some or the other spares required replacement.
    Battery replacement: 3 times.
    Clutch cables: 3 times.
    Brake shoes: 6 times.
    Chain sprocket kit: 1 time.
Timing chain kit replacement: 1 time after completing 50,000 kms. After this the engine noise was less.
    Central lock: 1 time.
Ignition coil wiring: Got rewiring done.
Engine Oil seal: 1 time. The one at the left foot behind the ignition coil.
Head lamp and tail lamp bulbs: 2 times.
Tyres: Back tyre: 1 time. Front tyre: Still using the tyre which came from showroom. Surprised. Believe me or not. Am good at braking and throttle. I never use brakes at curves and turns instead handle well with throttle. Try this habit. Be careful this needs practice. If not you will skid, slip, fall down and tyres will worn out fast.
Once the bike crosses more than a lakh kilometer the shock observers needs service/replacement.
Bike power is very poor. Don’t expect much from this 100 cc bike. VERY VERY VERY GOOD MILEAGE BIKE.
First 75,000 kms very very good bike without any problems or major replacements.
Have done several long distance trips alone. Bike has performed beyond expectations. No heating problem. One stretch ride from Thrissur to Bangalore with regular stop of 10 minutes. Bike performed extremely well not even a single screw came off the bike. Bike performs very well in cool weather and night compared to daytime.
Bike condition as on September 2015:
    Battery needs replacement.
    Chain sprocket kit replacement.
    Front tyre replacement.
    Timing chain replacement.
Rear shock absorbers both need replacement.
    Head light is very poor.

    The pros:

It has never let me down, may be an emotional bonding with me.

    Very easy maintenance.

    Very common bike.

You can make bends like a pro racer. It just outsmarts any other competitor in terms of cornering. Bend it to any extend and it will definitely rebound.

The fuel tank doesnt give enough thigh support to balance the bike. You will struggle very much.

    Very sluggish slow engine.

    Fork gets bent easily.

    Headlamp illumination is pathetic.

Only one passenger is able to travel in it, with pillion rider conditions become worst.

    Build quality is poor.

    Seat length is small.

The pick up just makes you dance in traffic signals. Dont wait in front of a car of a bus. You will make them much slower. They will horn madly.

Brakes – Forget you have a couple of them, they are of no use.

In first gear the pull is low and engine gives harsh vibration just after the bike moves. You have to shift to the second gear immediately and the pull drops unimaginably low and you have to engage the clutch to somewhat make it pull. In the second gear it gives vibrations in just 12kmph and similar story in third shift. The maximum speed is 35 with allowable vibration. It will beg you for a fifth and higher shift so much that you will do a dummy fifth shift in hopes that it is just the 3rd shift. THIS DEFINITELY NEEDS A FIVE GEAR TRANSMISSION. The pickup is extremely low and makes you feel poor. The brakes and suspension are too bad that you have to brake well in advance of potholes and the poor torque kicks in and you just cant survive in third of fourth gear with just a little reduction in speed. But you cant speed up further and it will immediately deliver its harshness.you again have to change the gear and engage the clutch to power it. This frequent requirement of gear shifts and longer clutch engagement will only tire you and reduces the mileage. The mileage is only 55 – 60 kmpl. Nothing more. Dont take it if you are in any urgency it will make fun of you. You only become obsessed with the ride. It is the bike that extracts least efficiency from a 97cc motor. Better go for a 125cc bike and that too with 5 gears.
